Catchword Terms of Service
Rules for using Catchword

Terms of Service

The agreement that applies when you install or use the Catchword Chrome extension.

Catchword is a vocabulary-learning tool provided without charge. Local Mode works on your device. Optional AI Mode connects directly to Google Gemini using an API key you provide and is subject to Google’s separate terms, eligibility requirements, usage limits, and charges.

Agreement to these Terms

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your installation of and access to Catchword. By installing or using Catchword, you agree to these Terms and the Catchword Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use Catchword and uninstall the extension.

Eligibility

Catchword is intended for adults learning vocabulary for professional or business purposes. You must be at least 18 years old and legally able to agree to these Terms. If you use Catchword for an organization, you confirm that you have authority to bind that organization. AI Mode may be used only by people who are at least 18 years old, only where the Gemini API is available, and only for purposes permitted by Google’s current terms. People under 18 may not enable AI Mode or provide a Gemini API key.

License to use Catchword

Subject to these Terms, you receive a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use Catchword for its intended vocabulary-learning purpose. This license does not transfer ownership of Catchword or its branding, source code, content, or other intellectual property.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • use Catchword unlawfully or in a way that infringes another person’s rights;
  • use Catchword, Gemini, or generated output to cause harm, facilitate abuse, or bypass safety controls;
  • interfere with, overload, probe, or attempt unauthorized access to Catchword or third-party services;
  • misrepresent generated material as verified, authoritative, or professional advice; or
  • use Catchword in violation of Chrome Web Store, Google API, Gemini API, or other applicable third-party terms.

AI Mode and your Gemini API key

  • AI Mode is optional. You supply a dedicated authorization key for an eligible Gemini API project. Catchword can use Unpaid Services or Paid Services and does not independently determine your service tier.
  • You are responsible for securing your key and for activity, quotas, restrictions, and any charges associated with it. Google’s handling of submitted content differs between Unpaid Services and Paid Services as described in the Privacy Policy and Google’s terms.
  • Your use of AI Mode must comply with the Google APIs Terms of Service, Gemini API Additional Terms, and applicable Google policies, including their age, region, account, and professional-or-business-use requirements.
  • Google, not Catchword, operates Gemini and controls its availability, models, output, and data-processing terms. Google may retain request data for safety, abuse prevention, and legal obligations. Key removal cannot recall data already received by Google.
  • Generated definitions, translations, explanations, and quiz material may be incomplete, inaccurate, outdated, or unsuitable. Verify important information independently.
  • Catchword and its AI output are learning aids, not medical, mental-health, legal, financial, safety, or other professional advice.

Website content and your inputs

You retain any rights you have in words, answers, and other material you provide. Catchword does not claim ownership of that material. You are responsible for having the right to use selected website content and for deciding whether it is appropriate to send particular inputs to Gemini. Catchword uses and transmits inputs only as needed to provide the feature you request, as described in the Privacy Policy.

Privacy and local data

The Catchword Privacy Policy explains what the extension handles, what stays on your device, what AI Mode sends to Google, how long local data remains, and the controls available to you. Google’s own privacy and data-use terms apply when you use Gemini.

Ownership and third-party materials

Catchword and its original software, design, and branding are owned by the publisher or its licensors and are protected by applicable intellectual-property laws. Bundled dictionaries, libraries, browser APIs, and other third-party materials remain subject to their respective licenses and terms. Relevant notices are included with the extension.

Availability, updates, and support

Catchword may be updated, changed, suspended, or discontinued. Features can depend on Chrome, on-device browser capabilities, Gemini, network access, and other services outside Catchword’s control. No particular feature, model, compatibility level, response time, or support level is guaranteed.

Disclaimers

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Catchword is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of accuracy, reliability, availability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, or error-free operation. Nothing in these Terms limits warranties or consumer rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Catchword publisher and contributors will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages; loss of data, profits, business, opportunity, or goodwill; Gemini charges; compromised API keys; or reliance on generated output. Any liability that cannot be excluded is limited to the minimum amount permitted by applicable law.

Termination

You may stop using Catchword at any time by uninstalling it. Your permission to use Catchword ends if you materially violate these Terms. The publisher may suspend or discontinue Catchword when reasonably necessary for security, legal compliance, third-party requirements, or product operations.

Changes to these Terms

Updated Terms will be identified by a new version number and effective date on this page. Material changes may also be communicated through Catchword or its Chrome Web Store listing. Continued use after updated Terms take effect means you accept them, except where applicable law requires another form of consent.

Questions and disputes

Please raise questions or concerns through Catchword’s public GitHub Issues page before pursuing formal action when practical. Do not include API keys, private page text, or other sensitive information in a public issue. This request does not waive any legal rights or remedies.
